Who, What, Where, When, Why
Bennett Causey, 18, a right-handed pitcher and infielder for the Pee Dee Academy Golden Eagles, committed to play baseball for the Francis Marion University Patriots during a heartfelt ceremony in Mullins. Causey cited his desire to remain close to home and his positive experiences with the coaching staff as major factors in his decision. He expressed excitement about joining coach Jeff Jefferson and his team in the upcoming seasons.
“I chose Francis Marion because it’s close to home,” Causey said. “I really didn’t want to go too far. I wanted to stay close to the family and I like the coaching staff there. They have very nice facilities and it’s a very good place to play baseball.”
Team Achievements and Future Prospects
Bennett Causey has been a vital part of the Pee Dee Academy baseball program, which recently secured two SCISA state championships. Playing varsity since the eighth grade, he has fostered strong bonds with his teammates and is driven to continue this success. The Golden Eagles are predicted to make their fourth consecutive appearance in the championship series.
“It’s been a great experience,” he noted. “I had a lot of fun throughout the years building a lot of memories with my teammates and hopefully we can go win again.”
Contributions to the Program and College Readiness
Causey was not the only player from Pee Dee Academy to draw attention from the NCAA. Fellow senior outfielder Caleb Oakley has also made his mark, being a strong contributor to the Francis Marion team with a remarkable batting average. Causey believes his academy provides excellent opportunities for young players aspiring to reach the collegiate level.
“I think it’s a great program doing a lot of good stuff out here,” he added.
Coach’s Perspective on Causey’s Talent
Brian Davis, head coach of Pee Dee Academy baseball and a former Francis Marion player, expressed pride in Bennett’s achievement. “Getting to know the new coach and finding out about the program, I was just happy that one of our guys went to one of their showcases and they liked him enough to give Bennett a shot,” he said.
Davis emphasized Causey’s unique pitching style and overall athleticism, stating, “They’re getting a very talented player with a lot of raw talent. I’m most excited about his pitching. His ability on the mound can be beneficial at the next level.”
Family Support and Multi-Sport Involvement
Bennett’s father, Shawn Causey, expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishments and mentioned the significant role Pee Dee Academy coaches have played in nurturing his skills. Aside from baseball, Bennett is also involved in football, serving as a wide receiver and defensive end for the undefeated varsity team currently competing for the SCISA Class 2A state championship.
With a promising future ahead at Francis Marion University, Bennett Causey’s journey reflects the dedication and hard work that pave the way for student-athletes to succeed both on and off the field. His commitment to both his education and athletics stands as an inspiration for aspiring athletes in the Mullins community.
