Florence, S.C. — On a crisp October morning, the city came alive as several hundred enthusiastic participants gathered for the annual Pee Dee Heart Walk at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center on October 28, 2023. This vibrant event was not just a gathering but a powerful message against cardiovascular disease, which remains one of the leading causes of death in our community.
This year, Will McLeod, the CEO of McLeod Regional Medical Center, took on the challenge as the chair of the upcoming 2024 Pee Dee Heart Walk. His leadership is significant as he aims to engage local businesses and organizations in the fight against heart disease and stroke.
“As chair of the upcoming Pee Dee Heart Walk, I am pleased with the work being accomplished to reduce heart disease and raise awareness of risk factors in our region,” McLeod shared passionately. This statement reflects his deep commitment, supported by a collaboration between healthcare professionals, businesses, and the community.
The Pee Dee Heart Walk is scheduled for October 26, 2024, starting at 9 a.m. at the same location. McLeod is leading a dedicated team of executives from the Florence area to promote various initiatives as part of the Heart Challenge. The Heart Challenge is not just about walking; it’s a comprehensive approach to engage the workforce and raise awareness about heart health.
With his extensive background, including a master’s degree in healthcare administration and active participation in local boards, McLeod exemplifies commitment to the community. “The strides gained have been a result of tremendous efforts in the partnership between research, healthcare, business, and community,” he added, emphasizing the collective role in fighting cardiovascular disease.
In her remarks, Lizzie Smith, the Executive Director of the Midlands American Heart Association, expressed gratitude for McLeod’s leadership. “We are incredibly grateful to Will for stepping up to move the needle when it comes to heart disease and stroke,” she said, emphasizing the importance of corporate involvement in these health initiatives.
The Heart Challenge initiative aims to raise funds through engaging activities and employee participation, highlighting that heart disease and stroke are largely preventable with the right resources. This engagement not only benefits the organization but also fosters community well-being.
When it comes to our health, understanding and managing stress is crucial, both physically and mentally. The Heart Challenge offers tools, resources, and activities specifically designed to support the well-being of employees. Participating businesses can get involved by contacting the American Heart Association at peedeesc@heart.org.
The turnout at the event was a heartwarming reminder of how our community comes together to support one another. With events like the Pee Dee Heart Walk, Florence is not just walking but taking giant steps toward a healthier future.
So, mark your calendars for next year’s Pee Dee Heart Walk on October 26, 2024. Join fellow community members in this crucial endeavor to raise awareness and funds for cardiovascular health. The fight against heart disease starts with all of us, and together, we can make a significant impact right here in the Pee Dee.
