This beloved basketball tournament not only highlights local high school talent but also raises funds for the Boys & Girls Club. With a competitive lineup featuring eight boys teams and four girls teams, the event promises an exciting weekend for basketball fans. Coach Yusuf English, driven by personal ties to the tournament, aims to lead the Tigers to their first title since 2010 amidst fierce competition.
In the vibrant city of Wilson, excitement is building as the 38th Pepsi Carolina Classic is set to tip off this Friday at South Florence High School. This annual tournament not only showcases some of the best talent in high school basketball but also supports a wonderful cause, raising funds for the Boys & Girls Club. It’s a family-friendly event that brings the community together every year, and this time promises to be even more thrilling.
Wilson High School’s boys basketball coach, Yusuf English, has a special connection to this tournament. Having previously coached at Hartsville and even winning the title in 2017, he carries a personal passion into this year’s competition. His experience, mixed with a strong desire to lead the Tigers to their first Pepsi Carolina Classic title since 2010, adds an inspiring edge to the team’s efforts.
This year’s tournament features an action-packed lineup of eight boys teams and four girls teams vying for their respective championships. Fans have plenty to look forward to, with the girls’ championship match scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the boys’ championship at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday. It’s the perfect way to spend a weekend for any basketball aficionado!
For those looking to catch the action live, tickets are available at the door for just $15. The tournament kicks off with a bang on Friday, starting with Crestwood going head-to-head with West Florence at 2:30 p.m.. Following that clash, Atlantic Collegiate will face off against Quality Education Academy at 4 p.m.. The Tigers will have their first game against Marlboro County at 6:45 p.m., a match they are eagerly anticipating, especially after last year’s tough overtime defeat to North Augusta. For the girls, Wilson will be challenging Trinity Collegiate at 5:30 p.m., right after South Florence takes on A.C. Flora at 1 p.m..
It’s an interesting twist this year as last year’s victor for the girls’ championship, Wilson’s team, will not go home with the trophy since the tournament’s structure presents a new winner this time around. However, junior player Zoey Miller believes the team is even better prepared this year, despite the introduction of a shot clock which could add pressure during games.
The competition is fierce as teams from the area bring their best game to the court. Marlboro County, led by coach Demetrius Knox, is noted for its impressive balanced attack, having previously taken down Wilson with a 47-33 victory. Meanwhile, Quality Education Academy has been a dominant force, having won the tournament for the past two years. Fans will be keen to see if they can make it three in a row this time.
The Pepsi Carolina Classic is more than just a basketball tournament; it’s a cherished event that embodies the competitive spirit and community involvement of local basketball enthusiasts. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a newcomer to the hoops scene, this tournament will bring plenty of excitement and drama. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of high school basketball under the bright lights, and this weekend is sure to deliver just that!
With the tournament kicking off soon, get ready for an unforgettable weekend of basketball, community support, and, of course, the chance to cheer on your favorite teams as they battle it out for the Pepsi Carolina Classic titles!
