Florence, S.C. has found itself at the center of a troubling wave of racially charged text messages that have left several community members in a state of fear and confusion. Over the past 48 hours, a number of black women in the Pee Dee area have reported receiving bizarre, unsettling communications that bring to mind a painful history that many thought was firmly in the past.
The messages claim that recipients have been “selected” to work at local plantations, hinting darkly at forced labor with phrases like, “Our exclusive slaves will come get you in a white van, be prepared to be searched so don’t try anything!” It’s a phrase that leaves a sour taste in the mouth, evoking an era that many would rather forget.
One of the women, a 61-year-old resident of Florence, reached out to us, sharing her frightening experience. She received an unsettling text message that even included her full legal name. “There’s somebody texting about picking me up from my address on November 10th in a brown van and using my entire legal name to go pick cotton in the nearest cotton field in Florence S.C.,” she shared. Her reaction? A mix of shock and fear.
She initially forwarded the message to her children, who live elsewhere. “One of my daughters said she saw it on Facebook, where another woman posted it on her page,” she continued. After feeling a wave of panic, including a set of “choice words,” the woman received another text that only compounded her fear. It stated, “It’s unfortunate I feel that way” and included her address and apartment number.
Feeling alarmed, she contacted the local police department to file a report and saved the text, which also contains an unknown phone number. This kind of unsettling incident is enough to put anyone on edge, especially when the messages are tailored with such personal details.
Another woman in the community mentioned that her daughter, who is currently in college in Florence, also received a similar message. Alarmed by the content, she immediately reached out to both the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office and the FBI to file a complaint. While their actions aim to address a serious issue, it also highlights the need for greater awareness about such instances occurring in the modern age.
In response to this disturbing trend of texts, we reached out to the Florence Police Department to inquire if they had received any reports pertaining to these messages. It’s concerning that they have no reports on file regarding the situation, which leaves residents worried about their safety and the validity of these threats.
This incident raises questions about the timely dissemination of information to better inform the community about ongoing threats. It shows just how damaging and deep-rooted racism can be, seeping into our daily lives in ways we wouldn’t expect. The modern age has brought about many advancements, but it seems some troubling views still linger.
Residents are left wondering about the motivations behind these homegrown fears and the individuals who might be perpetuating them. This is not just a case of insensitive pranks but a reflection of deep-seated societal issues that need addressing. As more people become aware of the situation, it’s essential for the Florence community to stand strong and unite against such hate-driven actions.
For now, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious messages they receive. Safeguarding personal information and sharing this information with loved ones can help prevent panic and pave the way for a more informed community. The hope is that together, they can navigate these unsettling waters and ensure a brighter, more inclusive future.
