Road in Florence Named in Honor of Former Senator
In a heartfelt ceremony held on August 30th, 2024, a section of Sumter Street in Florence, South Carolina, was renamed in honor of former Senator and Florence native Maggie Wallace Glover. Close to 100 community members braved the summer heat to celebrate the life and legacy of Glover, a tireless public servant known for her dedication to the residents of Florence and Marion Counties.
Accomplishments and Distinguished Service
Senator Glover’s political career spanned the better part of two decades. After serving as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1989 to 1992, she transitioned to the Senate, where she diligently served from 1993 to 2004. Before her government tenure, Glover made considerable contributions to education as a member of the Florence School District One School Board of Trustees from 1983 to 1989. She’s also celebrated as a veteran, having served in the United States Army from 1974 to 1977.
Education and Early Life
Born on August 29, 1948, to the late Fulton and Ethel Greene Wallace, Glover was a vibrant product of Florence. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Fayetteville State University in 1970 before furthering her education at Francis Marion College, graduating with a Master of Education degree in 1982.
Naming Resolution
In recognition of Glover’s immense contributions and service, the South Carolina General Assembly passed a resolution to name the portion of Sumter Street from its intersection with Alexander Street to its intersection with McQueen Street after the esteemed leader, now known as “Senator Maggie Glover Way”. It was a fitting gesture to honor a woman whose life’s work is woven into the fabric of Florence and South Carolina as a whole.
Enduring Legacy
During the naming ceremony, the Chair of the Florence Democratic Party spoke fondly of Glover and her enduring legacy, saying, “Maggie Glover’s contributions to the community, her leadership, and her impact on local politics or social causes is so honorable and real. Her legacy shall live on forever. This is truly a remarkable day. We love Maggie Glover.”
The renaming of the road ensures that future generations of Florence will remember the trailblazer who once walked their streets and advocated for their interests. The signs marking “Senator Maggie Glover Way” serve as a tangible reminder of Glover’s omnipresent influence and contributions to Florence and Marion counties and the state of South Carolina.
