Shining a Light on Domestic Violence: October Recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Shining a Light on Domestic Violence: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Florence, S.C. – Every October, communities across the nation come together to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a time meant for raising awareness and encouraging action to combat domestic violence. First marked in October 1981 as a national “Day of Unity,” DVAM has blossomed into a significant movement, shining a spotlight on a pressing issue that impacts millions regardless of age, gender, race, or economic background.

The Importance of Raising Awareness

Domestic violence can take many forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse. While it affects a vast number of people each year, many individuals may feel isolated or unsure of how to address their experiences. DVAM aims to provide a voice to survivors and advocates alike, creating a platform for sharing stories and fostering understanding within our communities.

2023 Theme: “It Stops with You”

This year, the Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Assault is excited to announce its theme for DVAM: “It Stops with You.” This motto encourages everyone—individuals, communities, and institutions—to take responsibility and actively work to end domestic violence. It’s a call to action reminding us that each of us has a role to play in creating a culture that does not tolerate abuse.

Events to Get Involved

Throughout October, the Pee Dee Coalition will be hosting a variety of events designed to spread awareness and educate the public about domestic violence. From educational workshops to community presentations and survivor support initiatives, these activities provide valuable resources for those affected by domestic violence.

Not only do these events aim to inform participants about the different aspects of domestic violence, but they also create a supportive environment where survivors and advocates can connect. The hope is that by bringing people together, we can foster understanding and forge a united front against domestic violence.

Taking Action Together

Recognizing and addressing domestic violence requires more than awareness. It demands active engagement from everyone in the community. Encouraging individuals to speak out against abusive behavior, offering support to victims, and educating ourselves and those around us can go a long way toward creating a safe environment.

As we enter October, residents are invited to take part in these vital discussions and events, emphasizing that “It Stops with You” is more than just a catchy phrase—it’s a promise. It’s a commitment to work collaboratively towards a future where domestic violence is a thing of the past.
