Charleston Trade Partnership with Canada

News Summary

South Carolina and Canada have entered a significant trade partnership resulting in a $5 billion investment in the state. With exports to Canada increasing, over 13% of SC’s goods now head north, solidifying Canada’s position as a key export market. Canadian companies are creating thousands of jobs in the state, and tourism from Canada is thriving with new flight connections. This partnership not only boosts the economy but also strengthens ties between the two regions, marking an exciting chapter for Charleston’s growth.

Exciting Times in Charleston: A New Trade Partnership with Canada!

Hey there, Charleston! Have you heard the big news? South Carolina and Canada are shaking hands on a historic trade partnership, and it’s already making waves in our southern charm city. In fact, this partnership has led to a whopping $5 billion investment, marking a 10-year high in investments flowing into our great state!

The Numbers Are In: Exports on the Rise!

So, let’s dig into the details. As of March, South Carolina has been sending $4.99 billion worth of goods and services north to our friendly neighbors in Canada. That means over 13% of all the stuff we export goes straight to Canada, making them our second-largest customer, just after Germany! Isn’t that amazing?

While many places are struggling with trade, South Carolina’s overall exports grew by an impressive 18% to $37.3 billion. Meanwhile, U.S. exports as a whole took a little dip of 2.2% from last year. This just shows how important our Canadian friends are to maintaining a thriving economy.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!

With 154 Canadian-owned companies already creating jobs for about 13,450 people in South Carolina, it’s clear that this partnership is beneficial. And it doesn’t stop there! We have not one, but two exciting new Canadian companies planning to set up shop here, which means even more employment opportunities!

One of these companies, Niagara Pharmaceuticals, is making a big leap by establishing its first U.S. operation right in Cherokee County. They’re putting down a $9 million investment and are looking to create 45 new jobs—now that’s what we call a win-win! Meanwhile, Silfab Solar is jumping in with a remarkable $150 million investment in York County, focusing on solar cell manufacturing that could bring about 800 jobs. Talk about some sunny prospects!

Why South Carolina?

So, what’s drawing these Canadian companies to South Carolina? Well, it turns out our state offers a business-friendly environment that’s incredibly appealing. Not to mention, there’s a thriving ecosystem in advanced manufacturing already in place, making it easier for newcomers to set up shop and prosper.

In particular, South Carolina plays a vital role in Canada’s production, especially in the automotive sector. The pandemic taught us all a lesson about the vulnerabilities of our supply chains, which makes strong trade partnerships like this even more important for both sides.

Canadians Coming to Charleston!

But it’s not only about business—Canada is also a major source of foreign tourism for South Carolina. Each year, we welcome between 10,000 and 15,000 Canadian visitors right here in Charleston! And there’s even a new daily flight connecting Toronto to Charleston, which is excellent news for tourism. This is now the only international flight into our beloved city, bringing in fresh faces and vibrant cultures.

Defense and Cooperation

Let’s not forget the strong defense relationship that Canada shares with the U.S. Over 1,000 personnel are involved in various joint military operations across the country. This partnership is just another testament to the strong ties that both nations share in different sectors.

What’s Next?

As we step into this new chapter of economic growth, it’s clear the relationship between Canada and South Carolina is growing, and it definitely deserves more attention. With all these exciting developments, it’s a fantastic time to be part of the Charleston community that’s on the rise—both economically and socially!

So, keep an eye out, Charleston! There are great things on the horizon, and we’re all in for a thrilling ride as we strengthen our ties with Canada!
