Sponsor Our ArticlesSouth Carolina has been named the top growth state for 2024, overtaking Texas for the first time. With a significant net gain of U-Haul movers, affordable living, and a booming job market, the Palmetto State is attracting new residents. Population growth is expected to continue, especially in Jasper County, which is currently the fastest-growing area in the U.S.
Hey there, folks! Have you heard the exciting news? South Carolina has officially been named the number one growth state for 2024, officially nudging Texas off its throne! According to a fresh report from U-Haul, this is the first time that South Carolina has landed at the top spot, climbing up three places from last year. It seems like all roads are leading to the Palmetto State!
The U-Haul report analyzes Growth Index data based on one-way customer transactions over the last year. This means they’re tracking all those movers and shakers embarking on new adventures, and guess what? South Carolina managed to achieve the largest net gain of U-Haul movers in the entire country! An impressive 51.7% of all one-way traffic is inbound, while departures saw a drop of 2%. It’s clear that people are flocking to South Carolina for a reason.
What’s drawing everyone in? For starters, the cost of living in South Carolina is a cool 7% below the national average. This makes it not only more affordable but also allows residents to enjoy all the wonderful amenities that the state offers. Plus, the mild climate makes it perfect for year-round outdoor activities. If you love soaking up the sun or engaging in outdoor adventures, South Carolina might just be your new playground!
South Carolina isn’t just a great place to live; it’s also becoming a hotspot for businesses. With a booming manufacturing sector that includes big names like Boeing, BMW, and Volvo, employment in the state has increased by a remarkable 7% over the past five years. Areas like Charleston’s Silicon Harbor are buzzing with tech startups, while Greenville is becoming a leader in advanced manufacturing. This seems to be a recipe for success!
According to the latest 2024 World Population Report, South Carolina’s growth rate is clocked at an impressive 1.06%. The state has a high move-in to move-out ratio of 2.05, with over 101,000 households moving in compared to just around 68,000 leaving. This has resulted in a lovely 1.65% increase in population. It’s no surprise that most newcomers are arriving from places like New York, North Carolina, and New Jersey.
Let’s talk cities! The three biggest urban areas in South Carolina, Columbia, Charleston, and North Charleston, together house over a million residents. By the way, don’t overlook Greenville County, which has around 525,534 residents, and Richland County, home to 416,147 people. Beaufort County has also made headlines with a nifty 7% population increase since 2020. Talk about community growth!
However, it’s not just an influx of new faces. Observations show a demographic shift with expected increases in residents aged 64 and older, likely surpassing those under 18 in the next decade. Meanwhile, the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area has claimed the title of the third-fastest-growing population in the nation in 2024. Wow!
Hold on, because Jasper County is on fire! This county is the fastest-growing in the U.S., boasting nearly 6% growth within just a year. Much of South Carolina’s population growth is driven by internal migration, even though the state is facing a negative birth rate. Interestingly, the White population is increasing here faster than in other states, emphasizing the changing landscape of South Carolina.
This growth does bring some challenges, including the urgent need for infrastructure developments like roads and utility services to keep pace with the rising population. Jasper County has even enacted a development moratorium to manage their zoning and density amidst the growth spurt.
Looking ahead, South Carolina is projected to welcome an additional million residents by 2042, bringing the total population to about 6.4 million. With four counties specifically driving this growth—Horry, Greenville, Spartanburg, and Berkeley—it’s evident that South Carolina is strategically positioning itself as a prime destination. Stay tuned, everyone, because the Palmetto State is just getting started!
