The tourism and travel industry in South Carolina has experienced a remarkable surge, growing by a staggering 65% over the last decade. With contributions soaring past $29 billion each year, this sector has proven to be a powerhouse of economic growth for the state.
Recently, Spartanburg played host to the annual South Carolina Governor’s Conference on Travel and Tourism, celebrating its 60th anniversary. This event attracted over 350 industry professionals eager to discuss the current trends and future prospects of tourism in the Palmetto State. Governor Henry McMaster took center stage, recognizing the vital role that South Carolina’s natural beauty plays in drawing visitors both domestically and internationally.
The growth of tourism isn’t just about the numbers; it’s also about the lives it touches. The industry now supports a whopping 10% of jobs in South Carolina, providing thousands of hardworking individuals with employment opportunities. Moreover, this booming industry contributes nearly $2 billion annually in state and local taxes, underscoring its significance to the state’s financial health.
Duane Parrish, the director of the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, emphasized that the travel experience isn’t solely about technology but rather about personal connections. Trends like “skip-gen” travel, where grandparents travel with their grandchildren, have gained popularity and highlight how different generations are now exploring the state together.
With four adult generations now reaching traveling age, the tourism sector is keen on understanding and adapting to the varying values and priorities of these diverse age groups. It’s better to cater to each one rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, especially as they all look for unique experiences that speak to their interests.
On the marketing front, the agency 9Rooftops has been reaffirmed as the marketing and advertising agency for the South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Their Discover South Carolina campaign is making waves! Focused on promoting hidden gems across the state, it has succeeded in bringing over 6.5 million trips to lesser-known destinations. As a result, the campaign has projected to generate more than $2.05 billion in hotel revenue, showcasing just how effective these advertising efforts can be.
Amidst this thriving backdrop, Spartanburg shines as an emerging city. It recently landed in the third spot on Southern Living’s list of “The South’s Best Cities On The Rise 2024.” With billions in capital investments flowing into Spartanburg County, around $1 billion alone in 2024, the area is on track for a bright future. In fact, Spartanburg is stepping up its game by hosting 85 sports events and meetings that year, resulting in a substantial $32 million in direct spending.
