Big news coming from South Florence! On January 30, 2025, it was announced that South Florence High School has once again earned a spot as a finalist for the esteemed Palmetto’s Finest award. This marks the school’s third consecutive year in the running for this highly sought-after honor. Talk about consistency!
The Palmetto’s Finest award is an annual accolade presented to schools across South Carolina by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA). Each year, this award highlights schools that exemplify excellence in various aspects including culture, student achievement, and instructional programs. Last year, Delmae Heights Elementary School took home the trophy, joining three other schools that were recognized statewide in 2024.
Excitement filled the air at South Florence High School when Principal Shand Josey, also recognized as the district’s Principal of the Year, delivered the news through a lively Google Meet session. Staff and students were in for a delightful surprise as they learned about the accomplishment together. This creates a strong sense of community and togetherness, which is so important in schools today.
To be considered for the Palmetto’s Finest award, schools must roll up their sleeves and submit a detailed application, diving deep into their school culture, student achievement, and instructional programs. After the application phase, the award committee conducts an on-site evaluation to get a real feel for the school environment before selecting the finalists.
It’s no small feat to be selected as a finalist. Each year, two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school receive this honor. For South Florence High School, the committee is gearing up for a second evaluation, which is set to take place sometime in February or March 2025. All eyes will be on the school as they showcase what they do best!
District Superintendent Richard O’Malley has made it clear that he believes South Florence High is truly dedicated to student success. He commended the leadership of Principal Josey and applauded the school for its academic growth and achievement over the years. It’s a team effort that’s clearly paying off!
The big reveal for which schools will take home the Palmetto’s Finest award will come in April 2025. Until then, the community is buzzing with anticipation for the next chapter in South Florence High School’s inspiring journey. Being recognized as a finalist for the third year in a row already speaks volumes about their dedication and commitment to excellence.
This recognition isn’t just a badge of honor for the school. It’s a celebration of the hard work put in by students, staff, and the entire community. It showcases the amazing things happening at South Florence High and continues to motivate everyone to strive for greatness. Who knows what the future holds?
