Darlington Honors Falling Hero with Record-Breaking Memorial 5K Event

Darlington Comes Together to Honor a Fallen Hero

In a heartwarming event on Wednesday, Darlington, S.C., witnessed an incredible gathering as Darlington Raceway presented a check valued at $14,000 to Allison Carraway, the widow of former Florence Police Department Sergeant Terrence Carraway. This generous amount reflects the proceeds collected from the sixth annual Terrence Carraway Memorial 5K held at the iconic raceway.

A Tribute to a Brave Officer

The event holds deep significance, as it commemorates the life of Sergeant Terrence F. Carraway, who tragically lost his life on October 3, 2018, while bravely responding to assist three deputies from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office. Carraway was not just a police officer; his remarkable legacy includes serving in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years and dedicating 30 years to the Florence Police Department. He was also known for his roles as a football coach at both Darlington Middle School and Darlington High School.

Building a Strong Community

During the check presentation, Josh Harris, President of Darlington Raceway, expressed the sentiments felt by many in the community, stating, “The memory of Sgt. Terrence Carraway is one we hold and value closely. We’re grateful to help Allison and the Terrence Carraway Memorial Foundation in continuing to honor his legacy and bring the Pee Dee Region closer together.”

A Successful 5K Event

The Terrence Carraway Memorial 5K has blossomed into a beloved annual tradition at Darlington Raceway. This year marked a significant milestone, with the race attracting a record of 376 participants, making it the second-largest 5K event in the Pee Dee region. The turnout was the largest the event has seen to date, showcasing the incredible support from the community in honoring Carraway’s memory.

Rallying for a Cause

Over the past six years, the 5K has become more than just a race; it has evolved into a rallying point for the community, raising over $65,000 for the Terrence F. Carraway Memorial Foundation. These funds are crucial in supporting local programs and causes, reflecting the strong bonds within the Pee Dee Region.

Looking to the Future

As the community continues to come together in honor of Sergeant Carraway, the Terrence Carraway Memorial 5K stands as a reminder of not only the sacrifices made by those in law enforcement but also the unity and support that can blossom in challenging times.

Events like these are vital in strengthening community ties, and the love and admiration for Carraway’s legacy can be felt throughout the city. Whether through participation in the 5K or contributions to the memorial foundation, the people of Darlington are proving that they will always stand together, upholding the memory of a true hero.
