Florence, South Carolina, has lost a beloved member of the community, Mr. Troy “Sunny” Cummings, who peacefully left this world on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at The McLeod Hospice House. Born on October 11, 1941, to the late William and Eula Mae Graham Cummings, Sunny’s life was a testament to hard work, love for family, and a cheerful spirit that touched many.
Sunny was well-known for his exceptional skills as a Master Brick Mason. His journey began in the Florence County Public Schools, where he graduated from Wilson High School in 1959. Under the guidance of Mr. James Hammonds, he discovered his passion for brick masonry, which laid the foundation for a successful career with Daniel Construction Company. Notably, he played a role in constructing the GE Plant and traveled extensively for work, leaving a mark wherever he went.
Sunny’s talents extended beyond his job; he was actively involved in his home church, St. Matthews Church of God in Christ Jesus, Apostolic, where he contributed to the brickwork. Whether it was building for his church or assisting friends and family with small projects, Sunny was always ready to lend a hand.
Beyond masonry, Sunny had a great passion for antique cars. His interest in collecting and refurbishing these classic vehicles led him to obtain a Refrigerant Certification at Florence-Darlington Technical College, allowing him to maintain the air conditioning systems in his prized cars. Friends and relatives often recall how he helped them save money by offering his mechanical expertise, earning him the nickname, the “go-to guy” in the community. Whether it was a freon refill or a small repair, people from all walks of life—lawyers, doctors, and even preachers—would reach out to him for assistance.
Sunny was a humble man who didn’t seek fame or fortune; instead, he cherished the simple things in life. He filled the lives of his loved ones with laughter and joy, often teasing and joking with family, particularly his niece, Dr. Twyla Cummings. She made it her mission to keep him in check regarding his health, and Sunny appreciated her care and concern.
The impact that Sunny had on his family and friends is immeasurable. He was known for his love of family reunions and took on the title of Cummings Family Historian. His dedication to preserving family history was evident as he sought out elder relatives, ensuring their stories and legacies wouldn’t be lost over time. Along with his cousin, Royal “Bro” Cummings, Sunny was a key figure in starting the first Cummings Family Reunion in South Carolina, which has since spread to other states.
Sunny accepted Christ at an early age and was actively involved in church life at St. Matthews Church. Even as health challenges arose that kept him from attending in person, he remained vocal about his love for God, often singing and expressing gratitude for the blessings in his life. His favorite song, “I Had Time,” holds special meaning for his family and is often played at events celebrating his life.
Sunny leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted sister Mariscia (James) Cooper, children Claudia L. Herbert, Tonya (Raymond) Chilsom, Chanda Littleton, and Troy C. Cummings, alongside five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings but is survived by three dedicated brothers and a multitude of extended family and friends.
Friends and family are invited to gather and pay their respects on Monday, September 9, 2024, from 4 PM to 7 PM, at the homes of his daughters. The celebration of life will continue with a service on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at 2:00 PM at St. Matthew Church of God in Christ Jesus, followed by burial at Sunset Memory Gardens in Effingham.
Sunny Cummings may be gone, but his legacy of hard work, love, and community spirit will surely live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
