Featuring a three-and-a-half-barrel brewing system, it will offer unique, on-site crafted beers and a menu of shareable food items. With a focus on community, the establishment is set to become a popular gathering spot, complete with plans for three apartments on the upper floor. Construction is expected to begin soon, paving the way for a vibrant new social hub in Charleston.
Hey there, Charleston residents! Get ready to raise your glasses, because there’s an exciting new brewpub on the horizon: Ursus Brew Works is set to open by early 2026 at 207 Hale Street! This fantastic development is happening in the space formerly known as The Strand, and it’s sure to make waves in our wonderful city.
The man behind this enticing venture is none other than Jason Martin. In May 2024, he took a big step by purchasing the 12,000-square-foot building that will soon house Ursus Brew Works. With deep roots in West Virginia, traced back to his great-grandfather, a coal miner, Martin brings a personal touch to this project. The name “Ursus,” by the way, comes from the scientific classification for the black bear, which is a symbol of West Virginia—talk about a homage!
So, what can we expect from Ursus Brew Works? Well, for starters, they’ll have a three-and-a-half-barrel brewing system that will allow them to craft unique and tasty beers right on site. Here’s the kicker: the beer served at the brewpub will be made exclusively for the establishment, although there might be some distribution in Charleston down the line.
Not only will the brewpub be all about the beer, but it also has plans for a delicious food menu focused on shareable items. Think shareable fry orders and other tasty bites that are perfect for enjoying with friends while sipping on a cold one. The menu will also have seasonal variations to keep things fresh and exciting for local foodies.
Ursus Brew Works is strategically located to attract guests from the bustling areas of Capitol and Summers streets. This new spot is within Charleston’s PODA (Permitted Outdoor Dining Area), which means to-go drinks can be carried about. Martin envisions Ursus Brew Works becoming a popular social gathering place for locals—ideal for pre- or post-event get-togethers, and we can already picture the laughter and cheers!
In addition to the brewpub, Martin has grand plans for the upstairs part of the building as well. He’s looking to renovate the second floor to create three apartments, one of which will be his personal residence along with space for family. This thoughtful addition truly makes Ursus Brew Works feel like a community-centric establishment.
If you’re as excited as we are, you’ll be glad to know that construction on both the brewpub and the apartments could begin as early as this month! It’s all hands on deck as Martin and his team work to bring this vision to life. The hope is that locals will embrace Ursus Brew Works as a regular hangout spot, creating memories over pints of craft beer and delicious bites.
Charleston, get ready! With Ursus Brew Works on the way, the city is about to gain a vibrant new place where beer lovers, foodies, and friends can come together. It’s set to be a spot that not only offers great food and drinks, but also strengthens our tight-knit community. Here’s to new beginnings in our beloved city! Cheers to that!
